There were private troubles as well. Communication with her mother was painfully sporadic because of Communist rule where her mother and sister resided. A letter might get through once in a decade. In July 1972, Drana died, followed only a year later by Aga. Mother Teresa had never been able to return to see them because the existing regime refused to offer guarantees that it wouldn’t prevent her leaving the country again.

Meanwhile, however, Mother Teresa was accumulating important supporters, including volunteer doctors and nurses, wealthy Hindu and Muslim donors, powerful members of the Indian government, and eventually global heads of state. Volunteers and Sisters alike often found the work indescribably rewarding. Her work among the poor of India was increasingly appreciated by people at all levels of Indian society. She was afforded free travel on Indian Railways, and Indira Gandhi herself provided Mother Teresa with a free pass on Indian Airways so that she could travel to the congregation’s other locations.
